Why Early Autism Detection and Evaluations Are Beneficial

Getting an early diagnosis of autism for your child can have a profound impact on their development. Identifying autism spectrum disorder (ASD) early lets you better understand your child’s needs. Early autism detection can also mean early intervention and support to help your child reach their full potential.

While the idea of getting a formal early diagnosis of autism may sound a bit overwhelming, the sooner you know for sure, the better. That diagnosis can be a pivotal moment for you and your child. It’s a time when you can begin your journey to thoroughly understand your child’s unique needs. When you understand their needs, you gain access to support services and can plan for their future.

Why Early Autism Detection and Evaluations Are Beneficial

A professional autism evaluation in San Diego can distinguish autism from other developmental disorders. Getting an early diagnosis of autism can lead to better outcomes for your child in the long run.

This article will discuss the importance of autism evaluations, why early detection is key, and how we can help.

Why Early Autism Detection Is Important

The first thing you must realize is that autism is not something that needs to be “fixed” in your child. Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. If your child has autism, it just means they interact, communicate, and learn in unique ways. And that’s okay.

One great thing about getting an early diagnosis of autism is that you can get the support and interventions your child needs sooner. In fact, studies show that early intervention can lead to significant improvements in:

  • language
  • cognitive skills
  • social skills
  • long-term outcomes like independent living and employment

Early recognition of autism’s signs and symptoms is critical. You, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and your child’s school can then work together to create a plan to address their specific challenges.

Early evaluation and diagnosis also allow you to:

  • have access to valuable resources
  • connect with support networks
  • better understand your child’s needs
  • empowerment to advocate for appropriate services and accommodations
Signs and Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Signs and Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

It can be challenging to recognize the signs of autism early on in your child’s development. And it’s important to note that not all children with autism exhibit the same symptoms. Not to mention, the severity of these symptoms can vary, as well.

While some children may show autism signs from an early age, others may not display clear signs until they reach preschool or elementary school age. Some of the most common signs of autism include:

  • delayed or lack of language development
  • difficulty with social interaction and communication
  • repetitive behaviors or interests
  • sensory processing issues
  • limited or no eye contact
  • trouble understanding and expressing emotions
  • preference for routine and predictability
  • difficulty with transitions from one activity to another

Factors to Consider When Evaluating for Autism

Receiving an early diagnosis of autism involves your healthcare professional considering multiple factors. These factors include:

Your child’s developmental history: During an autism evaluation, we will gather information about your child’s milestones, such as when they began speaking, interacting with others, and developing self-care skills. We will also look for any regression or previously acquired skills.

Behavioral observations: We will observe your child’s social interactions, communications, and play behaviors. This will allow us to identify patterns indicative of autism.

Standardized assessment tools: At BOLD Health, we use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), which is considered the gold standard for diagnosing ASD.

What is the ADOS-2, and How Does it Work?

Several standardized diagnostic tests can be used to diagnose ASD. The ADOS-2 is considered one of the best and is designed for children as young as 12 months up through adulthood. While it is a comprehensive evaluation, it is only part of the diagnosis process.

This standardized diagnostic test typically takes between 30-60 minutes to complete. It is considered the gold standard in diagnosing ASD because it can be tailored to your child’s age and development.

Our in-house board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, Dr. Germanos, has been specially trained to conduct this evaluation.

For young children, you may be present. However, we may ask you to interact with your child anytime. Your child’s ADOS-2 evaluation may include:

  • either semi-structured play or an interview session, depending on your child’s age and development
  • standardized activities and questions that allow Dr. Germanos the chance to observe behaviors
  • planned social activities designed for your child’s appropriate developmental level and age, allowing Dr. Germanos to observe social interactions, communication, and particular behaviors

Dr. Germanos will score your child on the ADOS-2, indicating whether they present signs consistent with an ASD diagnosis.
